Overview

The Eagle's Nest Treehouse is unique: A real treehouse, supported only by two trees with the floor about 30 feet above the ground. It is accessed by a spiral staircase that goes up to a suspension bridge, in the middle of a forest with complete privacy and tranquility but with all the comforts of home.

As you have probably found, if you look up "treehouse" on the Internet, most are not really up in the trees, just buildings on the ground surrounded by trees or held up slightly off the ground on poles. This is the first-ever real treehouse to be fully engineered and permitted.

The treehouse is located in the 200 acre forested section of our 400 acre ranch. It is also a farm stay, enabling visitors to explore the ranch operations (ducks, geese, cows, goats and livestock guardian dogs), learn about sustainable organic farming practices and where your (best) food comes from, hike the secluded forest and native pasture trails and enjoy nature at its best. Our ranch is such a spectacular natural setting that we feel a duty to share it with others. Visitors rave over its wild pasture and brush land, redwood, pine and bay laurel forests, and 1.5 miles of Salmon Creek running through it. Hikers may not see another human, but may very well spot almost any type of California wild animal and bird (in addition to our sparsely-distributed livestock).

Nestled high up in the trees, via a spiral staircase and suspension bridge, your tree house's amenities include electricity, a heater, and a full bathroom and shower. If you don't feel like hiking or exploring, you can stay warm and snug inside, protected from the elements. Relax with a cup of coffee and a book, or lounge on the deck listening to the birds in the trees. At the adjacent private picnic spot there is a fire pit with grille and a Weber barbeque where you can grill a steak or breakfast on our grass-fed beef sausages and organic duck eggs produced on the ranch.

History

The Eagle's Nest was originally built in the 1990's by the Mulholland Brothers (famous purveyors of luxury leather goods), who furnished it with their products and used it as a secluded office )see articles linked below). In 2000 it was featured in House & Garden Magazine, and in 2016, The Treehouse Guys TV crew filmed a segment on it for their show. They said the old-fashioned supports were slowly strangling the tree, so we hired one of their associates, Ken Huck, to move it and attach it between two stronger trees with modern mountings that do not harm the trees. The resulting expanded and rebuilt structure reflects Ken's amazing artistry and craftsmanship, with beautiful redwood floor, ceiling and wood trim that he milled from 1,000-year-old fallen trees on our property. Access via a suspension bridge, a large wrap-around deck, and a full bathroom including a shower with floor to ceiling windows looking out on the forest are just a few of its unique features.

Soon after completion, the treehouse was deemed
by the County of Sonoma to require a permit (of course, no treehouse had ever had one). After a three-year pioneering effort, a permit was finally obtained, followed by a further year and a half of work to comply with the required residential standards. With approval finally received, this amazing structure is now available to visitors. Please contact us or click on the links below if you are interested in arranging a treehouse farmstay.
